7 Ways to Reuse Your Old Sweaters
Posted on 22/06/2020
Remember when your grandmother spent all her time making pretty sweaters just for you? As sentimental as such clothes are, at some point they outlive their usefulness and you need to do something about them, otherwise they are simply taking up space and can be used only as filling for a rubbish removal bag. And don’t immediately think about donating them – you can still use them for a variety of purposes. If you need some ideas, here come some of them.
1. Sweater socks
These sweaters were created to keep you warm and you can keep that purpose alive by repurposing them as other clothes pieces that will keep you warm. The most popular choice are the sweater socks out of the sweater sleeves that will definitely keep your feet warm throughout the cold days of the winter season. If you prefer your hands to be warm, you can do the same with gloves instead, though that requires a bit more work and handiness with the yarn and needle.
2. Sweater phone cases
Your phones might have old plastic cases that often times get dirty and discoloured and the only way to repair them is to add them to the junk disposal heap and find new ones. Instead, you can make small pockets or whole button cases from your old sweater and have a durable case that can easily be washed every time you turn on the washing machine.
3. Sweater bag
Sweaters make for great containers as well. Repurpose one as a bag and you will be able to hold there a variety of possessions. Add a few of these bags as hanging pockets around the house and you will have a very cosy feeling. That’s one way of hanging a memory on the wall.
4. Sweater jewellery
Bet you never thought about this. Yes, if you like small patterns from your favourite sweater, you can create a variety of yarn jewellery from old clothing. That way you will be making use of the memory and still keeping it around without having to go to rubbish removal phases to deal with it.
5. Sweater pet beds
You can tell that your pets love your granny’s sweaters by the way they lay on top of them every time they manage to pull them out of the clothes pile. Do them a favour and instead of throwing the sweater to a waste removal heap, encase a small bed with it or make a bed out of it. Your pet will love it.
6. Pet sweaters
Alternatively, if your pets love them so much, you can make clothes for them from the sweater. They should be pretty easy to make, and you simply have to make a smaller version of the existing sweater. Now your dog will be warm for the winter, and it will have both something to love and to play with once the sweater starts to annoy them.
7. Sweater pillow cases
And the easiest thing you can make with a sweater is a pillow case for your couch cushions. They will be just as soft and comfortable as before and they will bring that cosy atmosphere that you have when you are usually surrounded by sweatered up family members.
With all these options, your old sweater will not be forgotten and you will always keep your grandmother’s gifts around, even as they keep piling up. Never think about junk disposal when it comes to something as sentimental as a family sweater. Once it no longer fits and you seemingly have no use of it, simply repurpose it and create a new use.
