Best Ways to Become More Eco-friendly

With so much information out there about the impact that our rubbish is having on the planet, it's no wonder that more and more people are looking for ways to become more eco-friendly when it comes to rubbish disposal. But what are some of the practical steps you can take to really make a difference? We share our ten commandments of a rubbish free life below.

1. Thou shalt only buy what thou need

The easiest way to enjoy a rubbish free life is to not buy rubbish; so next time you're out shopping ask yourself 'do I need this?' the answer is probably no, so don't buy it and you'll save on waste disposal and money.

2. Thou shalt borrow, not buy

If you do need something you don't have, can you borrow it instead of buying? Especially if you're only going to need it once or twice; odds are someone will have what you need so ask around and don't add to your rubbish collection.

3. Thou shalt get crafty

Got left over materials or packaging? Then get crafty and turn it into something instead of adding it to the waste collection pile. This is a great activity if you've got kids who can get involved; they love creating something out of 'rubbish'.

4. Thou shalt tidy up regularly

If you find that rubbish piles up in your home, then tidy as you go, empty your bins regularly, and keep on top of your cleaning. This way you'll add less to your waste pile because you'll be more aware of the waste you're accumulating, and will hopefully prevent you from buying more than you need too.

5. Thou shalt recycle

Give it to charity, take it to the tip or just separate your rubbish removal items in recycling bins – whatever you do, make an effort to recycle more. It's one of the most important things we can do for the planet, so make it your mission to recycle as much as you can.

6. Thou shalt use storage

Often when we don't have room for stuff we throw it away, so work on creating more storage in your home to avoid excessive rubbish disposal of perfectly good items. There are lots of clever storage options these days, so be innovative.

7. Thou shalt sell what thou don't need

Need to do a junk clearance and want to make some money? Then sell what you don't need instead of throwing it away; there are loads of ways you can do this online these days, so select the thing you want to sell, find a site to put it on, and watch the money roll in.

8. Thou shalt Be ruthless

Don't hoard – if you've got rubbish piling up, then get ruthless and do something about it, sell it, recycle it or share it. If you find you struggle with this, then get help from a friend or relative who can help you cut way back.

9. Thou shalt hit the tip

For bigger items that you need to dispose of, the tip is your best friend. Take it down your local recycling centre and have fun chucking things into the massive containers (it's great stress relief!).

10. Thou shalt get help

Struggling to deal with your waste yourself? Then call in some back up. This could be a friend or family member, but you may find you need the service of a professional waste removal company if you're facing serious issues. Get them to deal with your excess rubbish, then you don't have to worry about it at all.
